Wall Posts Team-High 13 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts UDC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 11, 2020) – Despite a team-high 13 points from freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 71-43 decision to ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (6-10, 0-5 ECC) have dropped seven games in a row, while the Firebirds (4-11, 1-3 ECC) pick up their first ECC win.

Wall had 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting with two steals. Junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) had seven points and four rebounds and redshirt sophomore Patrice Harding (Sayreville, N.J./LIU Post) and sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) both had six points.

UDC was led by Maya Thomas who had a game-high 23 points.

The Firebirds scored the game's first three points before a Brown three-pointer tied the game up at 3-3 at the 7:12 mark of the first quarter. UDC responded with a 13-0 run to take a 16-3 lead with 51 seconds left in the opening quarter. An Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) free throw made it 16-4 in favor of the guests at the end of the first quarter.

UDC started the second quarter on a 13-4 run to increase the lead to 21, 29-8, with 3:31 remaining in the half. Mercy answered with a 6-0 run, capped off by two Bender free throws, to make it 29-14 with 1:20 left in the half. A Halia Ellis jumper made it 31-14 at halftime with UDC in front.

The Firebirds opened the third quarter on a 9-4 run to build the lead to 22, 40-18, with 6:11 left in the period. Mercy ensued with an 11-2 run, finished off by a Trinity Hudson (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) layup, to get the Mavericks within 13, 42-29, at the 1:59 mark. UDC answered with four straight points and headed into the fourth quarter up, 48-33.

A Wall three-pointer at the 9:11 mark of the final quarter cut the deficit to 12, 50-38. UDC came back on a 19-3 run to take their largest lead of the game, 69-41, with 1:31 remaining. The Firebirds led the rest of the way to pick up the win.

Mercy shot 21.1 percent (12-of-57) from the floor, 9.1 percent (2-of-22) from downtown and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the foul line. UDC shot 38.9 percent (28-of-72) from the field, 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from beyond the arc and 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from the charity stripe. UDC held a 52-44 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, January 15th when they play at Queens at 5:30 p.m.
