FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2020) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 69-64 decision to ECC foe Queens College on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (6-11, 0-6 ECC) have dropped eight games in a row, while the Knights (5-11, 2-4 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak.
Sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had a team-high 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting and senior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) had a season-high 13 points on 4-for-8 shooting. Junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) ended with eight points, six rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) posted six points and 11 rebounds.
Queens was led by Brianne Moxley who had a game-high 22 points.
Mercy jumped out to a 10-4 lead at the 5:54 mark of the first quarter after a Lake layup. Queens responded with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 10-9. The Mavericks concluded the quarter with four straight points to take a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play.
The Mavericks started the second quarter on a 5-1 run to take a nine-point lead, 19-10, with 8:59 left in the first half. Queens cut the deficit to seven, 25-18, at the 4:26 mark before Mercy rattled off an 8-2 run, capped off by an Ashley Lambert (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) three-pointer, to take their largest lead of the half, 33-20. Queens closed the quarter on a 4-0 run to head into halftime down, 33-24.
A Hall layup at the 6:50 mark of the third quarter once again gave the Mavericks a 13-point lead, 43-30. Queens answered with three straight points before Wall drained a layup to make it a 12-point game, 45-33, with 5:11 left in the third quarter. The hosts went on a 9-2 run to make it 47-42 before Brown drained a free throw to send the Mavericks into the fourth quarter up, 48-42.
Queens trimmed the lead to two, 48-46, at the 9:26 mark of the fourth quarter. Mercy rallied with six straight points to put the lead back to eight, 54-46, with 7:50 left. The Knights ensued with an 11-0 run to take a 57-54 lead with 3:36 remaining. The Mavericks later made it 59-57 following two Hall free throws at the 2:23 mark, but Queens followed with six straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 65-57, with 46 seconds left. The Knights held the lead the rest of the way to secure the win.
Mercy shot 36.8 percent (25-for-68) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from downtown and 42.9 percent (9-for-21) from the foul line. Queens shot 40.6 percent (26-for-64) from the field, 0.0 percent (0-for-5) from beyond the arc and 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from the charity stripe. Queens held a 43-40 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, January 18th when they play at Molloy at 12 p.m.
