Griffin Records Season-High 28 Points and Career-High-Tying 26 Rebounds as Men's Basketball Plays at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2020) – Despite a team-high 28 points and game-high 26 rebounds from redshirt junior Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional), the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered an 85-61 setback to ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (4-13, 2-5 ECC) fail to build off their win on Wednesday, while the Lions (7-9, 4-2 ECC) snap a three-game losing streak.

Griffin set a new season high in points and tied his career high in rebounds set earlier this season against Nyack on December 10th. The forward also added three assists, two blocks and one steal. Senior Lamont Williams Jr. (Irvington, N.J./County College of Morris) netted ten points and three assists and junior Nakeem Hamilton (Bronx, N.Y./Hostos CC) and sophomore Korey Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) both added seven points.

Molloy was led by Nick Corbett who had a game-high 36 points with 11 rebounds.

The Lions scored the game's first seven points and held a 9-2 lead at the 16:56 mark of the first half. Mercy followed with a 9-2 run of their own to tie the game up at 11-11 following a Lee layup with 14:31 on the clock.

The score was later tied at 14-14 before the hosts went on a 7-0 run to take a 21-14 lead with 12 minutes remaining before halftime. Mercy cut the deficit to two, 21-19, following a Williams Jr. three, but the Lions responded by increasing the lead back to six, 25-19.

Molloy later held an eight-point lead, 40-32, with 3:44 on the clock. The Mavericks regrouped and came back on an 8-0 run to tie the game up at 40-40 with 1:28 left in the half. A Colin Brady jumper gave the lead back to the Lions and Hamilton sank a free throw for Mercy right before halftime to send the Mavericks into halftime down just one, 42-41.

A Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara) three to open the second half gave Mercy a 44-42 lead. After Molloy tied the game up at 44-44, a Griffin layup put the Mavericks back up 46-44 with 18:22 remaining. The Lions responded with four straight points to take a 48-46 lead before a Williams Jr. layup at the 16:30 mark tied the game up at 48-48.

The game was tied at 57-57 following a Griffin jumper with 11:02 on the clock. The Lions concluded the game on a 28-4 run to pull away from the Mavericks, holding Mercy without a field goal for the final 9:58 to secure the win.

Mercy shot 31.5 percent (23-for-73) from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-for-24) from downtown and 57.1 percent (8-for-14) from the foul line. Molloy shot 46.5 percent (33-for-71) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (13-for-17) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 51-43 edge on the glass and held an 18-2 edge in fastbreak points.

Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, January 25th when they host Bridgeport at 2 p.m.
