OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2020) – Despite a team-high 14 points from freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 77-63 decision to ECC foe New York Tech on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (6-9, 0-4 ECC) have dropped six games in a row, while the Bears (9-7, 2-2 ECC) have won two games in a row.
Wall also had five rebounds and went 3-of-5 from downtown. Sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) netted 11 points and senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) had ten points on 4-of-5 shooting. Junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) recorded nine points and nine rebounds and freshman Kellie Nudd (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) posted eight points.
New York Tech was led by Ketsia Athias who had a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bears scored the game's first five points and jumped out to a 14-2 lead at the 5:46 mark of the first quarter. Mercy responded with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to three, 14-11, with 3:36 left in the opening quarter. However, the hosts closed the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 26-11 lead after one quarter of play.
Mercy cut the deficit to ten, 26-16, just over a minute into the second quarter following a Trinity Hudson (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) three. New York Tech put together a 13-2 run to increase the lead to 21, 39-18, with 3:39 remaining in the half. A Collier jumper made it 39-20, but a Shalie Frierson three gave the Bears a 42-20 lead at halftime.
The hosts increased the lead to 26, 54-28, at the 3:26 mark of the third quarter and headed into the fourth quarter up, 58-35.
A Carol Arfinengo three gave the Bears their largest lead of the game, 64-37, with nine minutes left. New York Tech looked to have the game well in hand but the Mavericks had other plans, responding with a 16-0 run to cut the deficit to 11, 64-53, with five minutes left. Two Wall free throws once again made it an 11-point game, 66-55, at the 3:53 mark, but the Bears tallied four straight points to put the lead back to 15 and held on for the win.
Mercy shot 42.0 percent (21-of-50) from the floor, 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from downtown and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the foul line. New York Tech shot 41.4 percent (29-of-70) from the field, 28.6 percent (8-of-28) from beyond the arc and 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the charity stripe. The Bears held a 39-35 edge in rebounds.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, January 11th when they host District of Columbia at 12 p.m.
