Collier Scores Team-High 15 Points as Women's Basketball Plays at RV St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2020) – Despite a team-high 15 points from senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 90-57 decision to ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at Aquinas Hall Gym.

The Mavericks (7-13, 1-8 ECC) fail to build off their win over Bridgeport last Saturday, while the Spartans (17-3, 9-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.

Collier went 7-for-10 from the floor and had a team-high five rebounds. Freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) netted nine points and three assists and redshirt sophomore Patrice Harding (Sayreville, N.J./LIU Post) added six points.

St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Zaria Thomas who had a game-high 22 points.

Mercy jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a jumper from Collier and a three from Wall. St. Thomas Aquinas answered with six straight points to take a 6-5 lead before junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) tied the game up following a free throw at the 7:48 mark. The Spartans followed with a 12-0 run to take an 18-6 lead with 5:17 remaining in the opening quarter. The hosts later held an 11-point lead, 24-13, before Mercy went on a 4-0 run to get within seven, 24-17. However, St. Thomas Aquinas closed the quarter with back-to-back threes to take a 30-17 lead after one quarter.

The Spartans started the second quarter on a 19-4 run to take a 49-21 lead with 3:35 left in the opening half. Mercy ended the half on a 9-2 run, capped off by a Brianna Lee (Elmont, N.Y./Saint Mary's) jumper, to head into halftime down, 51-30.

St. Thomas Aquinas outscored the Mavericks 21-13 in the third quarter and 18-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.

Mercy shot 45.7 percent (21-for-46) from the floor, 40.0 percent (4-for-10) from downtown and 64.7 percent (11-for-17) from the foul line. St. Thomas Aquinas shot 49.3 percent (34-for-69) from the field, 57.1 percent (12-for-21) from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent (10-for-12) from the charity stripe. The Spartans held a 34-29 edge on the boards and used 31 Mercy turnovers to hold a 36-13 edge in points off turnovers.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, February 5th when they play at District of Columbia at 5 p.m.
