ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2020) – Despite a team-high ten points from freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 71-39 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Friday night.
The Mavericks (7-16, 1-11 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Redhawks (13-9, 6-6 ECC) improve to .500 in ECC play.
Wall added two assists and four steals. Senior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) had nine points and a team-high-tying seven rebounds. Sophomore Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) had seven points and freshman Brianna Lee (Elmont, N.Y./Saint Mary's) and junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) both had five points.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Sara Nady who had a game-high 20 points.
The Redhawks scored the game's first nine points and held an 11-2 lead at the 2:27 mark of the first quarter. A three-point play from Brown got the Mavericks within, 11-5, but the hosts ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 16-5 lead after one quarter.
Roberts Wesleyan tallied the first five points of the second quarter to increase the lead to 16, 21-5, with 8:22 left in the first half. Mercy answered with five straight points to cut the deficit to 11, 21-10, at the 7:05 mark. The Redhawks put the lead back to 16, 30-14, before a Wall three-point play right before halftime got the Mavericks within, 30-17, entering the intermission.
A Wall jumper to open the third quarter trimmed the Redhawk lead to 11, 30-19. However, Roberts Wesleyan came back on a 17-5 run to build a 47-24 lead with 4:20 left in the third quarter. Mercy made it a 20-point game, 47-27, but the hosts ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to head into the final quarter up, 56-29.
Roberts Wesleyan outscored the Mavericks 15-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Mercy shot 22.8 percent (13-for-57) from the floor, 5.0 percent (1-for-20) from downtown and 60.0 percent (12-for-20) from the foul line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 40.9 percent (27-for-66) from the field, 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 40-38 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, February 16th when they play at Daemen at 1 p.m.
