AMHERST, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2020) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a79-60 decision to ECC foe Daemen College on Sunday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (7-17, 1-12 ECC) have dropped five games in a row, while the Wildcats (20-3, 12-1 ECC) have won 12 games in a row.
Freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) led Mercy with a team-high 19 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) had 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting and freshman Kellie Nudd (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) scored a career-high-tying 13 points with a team-high five assists. Senior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) posted eight points and four assists.
Daemen was led by Tiara Filbert who had a game-high 20 points.
The Wildcats scored the game's first six points and held an 11-4 lead at the 6:49 mark of the first quarter. Mercy followed with an 8-2 run, capped off by a Wall three, to cut the Daemen lead to one, 13-12, with 4:40 left in the opening quarter. The hosts closed out the quarter on a 12-3 run to take a 25-15 lead after one quarter.
Daemen started the second quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 40-17 lead with 5:02 left in the first half. A Wall layup cut the deficit to 21, but the Wildcats ensued with a 7-2 run to take their largest lead of the half, 47-21. A Hall free throw right before the end of the half sent Mercy into halftime down, 47-22.
A Caroline White layup to open the third quarter gave the hosts a 49-22 lead. Daemen held a 26-point lead, 64-38, with 2:24 left in the quarter before the Mavericks ended the quarter on a 5-0 spurt to head into the fourth quarter down, 64-43.
Daemen increased the lead back to 25, 70-45, at the 6:48 mark of the fourth quarter. Mercy continued to battle and cut the deficit to 18, 72-54, after a Nudd three with 2:59 on the clock. The Wildcats answered with five straight points and held on for the win.
Mercy shot 50.0 percent (19-for-38) from the floor, 45.5 percent (5-for-11) from downtown and 77.3 percent (17-for-22) from the foul line. Daemen shot 50.9 percent (29-for-57) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-for-23) from beyond the arc and 82.4 percent (14-for-17) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 27-24 edge on the glass and used 19 Mercy turnovers to hold a 26-7 edge in points off turnovers.
