Mooradian Records RBI and Seckler Pitches Six Strong Innings as Baseball Plays at No. 15 Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. (Feb. 17, 2020) – Despite an RBI from senior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) and six strong innings on the mound from freshman Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), the Mercy College baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to No. 15 Newberry College on Monday night at the Smith Road Complex.

The Mavericks (1-4) have dropped three games in a row, while the Wolves (11-1) have won two games in a row.

Mooradian went went 1-for-3 with an RBI and freshmen Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville DeWitt) and Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) both went 2-for-3. Graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 1-for-4 and junior Corey Tingo (Selden, N.Y./Suffolk CC) went 1-for-1. Seckler made his first collegiate start and went 6.0 innings with three earned runs allowed to earn a no-decision. Junior Osvaldo Encarnacion (El Paso, Texas/The College of New Rochelle) pitched 0.2 inning of relief and allowed four earned runs to take the loss. Senior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Newberry was led by Ryan Brown who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Jacob Jeffcoat pitched 3.0 scoreless innings to earn the win.

Mercy opened the scoring in the top of the first with a run to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) led off the game with a walk and Mooradian reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third after a throwing error by the pitcher. Saltzman then scored after a failed pickoff attempt to give the Mavericks an early lead.

Seckler kept the nationally-ranked Wolves off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when they a scored a run on one hit to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Mavericks answered back in the fifth inning with two runs to retake the lead at 3-1. Glennerster led off the inning with a single and sophomore James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third after Glennerster advanced to third on an error by the catcher. A double steal led to Glennerster scoring to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. Mooradian drove in Dieguez later in the inning with an RBI single to left field to make it 3-1.

Newberry tied the game up with two runs on two hits in the fifth inning.

The game remained tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the seventh when the hosts scored five runs on four hits and a Mercy error to take an 8-3 lead. Newberry held the Mavericks off the scoreboard for the final two innings to secure the win.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, February 19th at Francis Marion at 3 p.m.
