DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2020) – Despite a game-high 28 points and 20 rebounds from redshirt junior Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional), the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 61-46 decision on Senior Day to ECC foe Queens College on Saturday afternoon at Victory Hall Sports Center.
In a ceremony prior to the game, senior Lamont Williams Jr. was recognized for his contributions to the Mercy College men's basketball program.
The Mavericks (5-20, 3-12 ECC) have dropped four games in a row and are eliminated from ECC Tournament contention, while the Knights (8-17, 6-9 ECC) sit in fifth place in the ECC standings.
Griffin went 10-for-21 from the floor and had two blocks. Williams Jr. had seven points and junior Dayvon Cuffey (Baltimore, Md./Anne Arundel CC) had six points and six rebounds. Freshman Brandon Wilson (Farmingdale, N.J./Covenant College Prep) added five points
Queens was led by Elijah Bovell who had a team-high 13 points.
The Knights took an early 8-2 lead at the 16:27 mark before Mercy went on a 16-6 run to take an 18-14 lead with 9:27 remaining in the first half. The Mavericks held a three-point lead, 21-18, following a pair of Griffin free throws with 7:52 on the clock.
Queens closed the half on a 17-0 run to take a 35-21 lead at halftime.
The Knights opened the second half by increasing the lead to 16, 39-23, with 17:29 remaining. Queens held a 15-point lead, 42-27, with 15:11 on the clock before five straight points from Griffin made it 42-32.
After a Queens timeout, the Knights scored six straight points to put the lead back to 16, 48-32, with 10:13 left. Mercy continued to battle and went on a 9-1 run, capped off by a Williams Jr. layup, to cut the deficit to single digits, 49-41, with 6:31 on the clock.
The momentum was short-lived as the visitors scored seven straight points to build a 15-point advantage, 56-41, with five minutes left. Mercy would cut the deficit to 13 on two separate occasions but could not get closer.
Mercy shot 28.8 percent (17-for-59) from the floor, 15.0 percent (3-for-20) from downtown and 60.0 percent (9-for-15) from the foul line. Queens shot 36.8 percent (21-for-57) from the field, 23.3 percent (7-for-30) from beyond the arc and 63.2 percent (12-for-19) from the charity stripe. Rebounds were tied at 43-43.
Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks conclude their season on Saturday, February 29th at Bridgeport at 3 p.m.
