DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2021) – Despite seven different Mavericks recording multiple kills, the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (15-25, 22-25, 19-25) decision to American International College on Friday night at Victory Hall Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (8-11) have lost three matches in a row, while the Yellow Jackets (15-6) have won eight straight matches.
Junior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) had a team-high eight kills with seven digs and senior Sophia Flanders (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had a match-high 15 digs. Junior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College) had 29 assists, six digs and four kills and seniors Nilka Rivera Maldonado (Bayamon, P.R./Concordia College) and Tynesha Adams (Prattville, Ala./Bethune Cookman University) and junior Stéphanie Lankhorst (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap Apeldoorn) had six kills.
AIC was led by Andrea Serra who had a match-high 17 kills.
The Yellow Jackets opened the first set with seven straight points to take a 7-0 lead. Mercy later made it 8-3 after a Lankhorst block, but the visitors went on a 4-0 run to take a 12-3 lead. The Mavericks later cut the deficit to six, 17-11, after a Jessica Angounou (Phoenix, Ariz./Betty H. Fairfax) kill, but AIC came back on a 7-2 run to take a 24-13 lead. Mercy scored two straight points to make it 24-15, but a Maverick service error gave the Yellow Jackets the set, 25-15.
The second set was tied at 1-1 after a Lankhorst kill before AIC followed with a 7-3 run to take an 8-4 lead. Mercy later trimmed the deficit to two, 14-12, after an Adams kill. However, the Yellow Jackets ensued with an 8-4 run to take a 22-16 lead. The Mavericks rallied and got within two, 24-22, but a Serra kill gave the Yellow Jackets the 25-22 win.
Mercy took a 4-2 lead in set three before the visitors responded with a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. The Mavericks followed with three straight points of their own to tie the set at 7-7. The set was tied again at 8-8 before the Yellow Jackets rattled off two straight points to take a 10-8 lead. Mercy later got within one, 14-13, but AIC recorded seven straight points to take a 21-13 lead. The Mavericks cut the deficit to five, 24-19, but a Serra kill gave the Yellow Jackets the 25-19 set three win.
Mercy had 35 kills, 41 digs, 33 assists, six blocks, two aces and hit .179. AIC had 44 kills, 49 digs, 42 assists, six blocks, seven aces and hit .269.
Head Coach Gary Preston Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 19th when they host Caldwell at 7 p.m.
