Cotton Scores Game-Winning Goal in Overtime as Field Hockey Earns 3-2 Senior Day Win Over Franklin Pierce

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2021) – Powered by the game-winning goal in overtime from graduate student Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 3-2 Senior Day win over NE10 foe Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, Cotton, Briannagh Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place), Savanna James (Ellenville, N.Y./Ellenville), Cydney Wolff (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) were recognized for their contributions to the Mercy College field hockey program.

The Mavericks (3-9, 2-7 NE10) snap a four-game losing streak, while the Ravens (3-11, 1-9 NE10) have dropped four games in a row.

Cotton scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) netted her second goal of the season and junior Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) added her first goal. Freshman Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) had a game-high two assists and Viscione made 14 saves to earn the win.

Franklin Pierce was led by Julia Rooijakkers and Feline van Doorn who both scored. Addy Araneo made nine saves to take the loss.

Viscione stopped two shots in the first eight minutes of action to keep the game scoreless. It remained scoreless until the 10th minute when Volz found Schreck in the middle and Schreck fired the ball into the right side to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first quarter with Viscione making six saves in the period.

Mercy wasted little time in scoring again as Sacco found the back of the cage in the 17th minute, off an assist from Volz, to make it 2-0. The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime with Viscione making eight saves in the half.

The score stayed 2-0 until the 33rd minute when Rooijakkers scored following a corner to make it 2-1. Araneo made four saves later in the quarter to keep the Mavericks from scoring in the frame.

It remained 2-1 until the 58th minute when van Doorn scored to make it 2-2. The score stayed 2-2 at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime.

Viscione made an early save in the overtime to keep it 2-2. Cotton found the back of the cage in the 65th minute after Araneo made an initial save to give Mercy the 3-2 win.

Franklin Pierce held a 24-17 edge in shots and a 15-10 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 20th when they host Molloy at 3 p.m.
