ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2021) – Powered by a career-high two goals from junior Matthias Kuhn (Viernheim, Germany/University of Mannheim), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field.
The Mavericks (5-4-2, 2-2-2 ECC) end a five-game winless streak, while the Lions (7-5-1, 4-2 ECC) suffer just their second ECC loss of the season.
Kuhn now has a team-high five goals on the year and graduate student Pau Echarri (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Ceu San Pablo) added his first assist of the year. Freshman Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made four saves to earn the shutout win.
Molloy was led by Jesse Schleeper who had two shots on goal. Nick Conklu made three saves to take the loss.
The Lions recorded the game's first three shots on goal in the opening 24 minutes of action. Mercy would score the game's first goal on their first shot on goal when Kuhn took a touch pass from Echarri and scored off the run to make it 1-0 in the 28th minute.
The score remained 1-0 at halftime with Mercy holding a 6-5 edge in shots.
Elvestad made his final save in the 62nd minute and Mercy tacked on an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Kuhn scored off a rebound of a Kevin Aguilar (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) shot that was stopped by Conklu, making it 2-0.
Kuhn nearly added a third goal in the final seconds when his shot hit the crossbar. Mercy held on for the win after outshooting Molloy 10-3 in the second half.
Mercy held a 16-8 edge in shots and Molloy had a 10-9 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 19th when they play at Jefferson at 2:30 p.m.
