PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 19, 2021) – Powered by the game-winning goal from freshman Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Verbo Divino) and a season-high seven saves from graduate student Felipe Baeza (Santiago, Chile/USC Upstate), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Jefferson University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (6-4-2) have won two games in a row, while the Rams (3-7-2) have dropped three of their last four games.
Penafiel scored his first collegiate goal and Baeza made seven saves to earn the shutout win.
Jefferson was led by Val Mokrejs who had a team-high three shots. Matteo Crescente made four saves to take the loss.
Baeza made three saves in the first 11 minutes of action to keep the game scoreless. Penafiel recorded the Mavericks first shot on goal in the 28th minute on a header shot that was stopped by Crescente. Baeza made two more saves in the half and Crescente made another to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Penafiel gave the Mavericks the lead in the 50th minute with his first collegiate goal on a shot from 25 yards out that beat the Jefferson goalkeeper on the right side to make it 1-0.
Baeza made two more saves in the final 10 minutes to keep Mercy ahead and the Mavericks held on for the 1-0 victory.
Jefferson held a 16-9 edge in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, October 22nd when they host Queens at 2 p.m.
