DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2021) – Powered by a career-high five points from graduate student Pau Echarri (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Ceu San Pablo), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 4-2 win over ECC foe Queens College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field in a Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
The Mavericks (7-4-2, 3-2-2 ECC) have won three games in a row, while the Knights (6-6, 2-5 ECC) fall to .500 on the year. The four goals scored by Mercy is a season high.
Echarri had a career-high two goals with one assist. He now has five goals on the year. Junior Matthias Kuhn (Viernheim, Germany/University of Mannheim) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season and senior Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) netted his fourth goal of the year and added an assist. Senior Rainiero Salas (Panama City, Panama/Alderson Broaddus University) and junior Vasco Baptista (Alges, Portgual/Escola Secudaria Miraflores) also had assists and freshman Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made four saves to earn the win in goal.
Queens was led by Nicholas Tagios and Erik Hernandez who scored and by Dario Cruz who made 11 saves.
Kuhn gave Mercy a 1-0 lead in just the 3rd minute of action following a cross from Baptista. Less than a minute later Tagios tied the game at 1-1.
It remained 1-1 until just the 9th minute of action when Jones fed Echarri and the graduate student scored his first goal of the day to make it 2-1.
The score stayed 2-1 heading into halftime with Cruz making five saves for the Knights.
After four more saves by Cruz to open the second half, Queens tied the game again in the 63rd minute on a Hernandez goal to make it 2-2.
Jones gave the lead back to Mercy in the 71st minute following a cross from Echarri, making it 3-2.
Just under two minutes later Echarri netted his second of the day off a Salas corner kick to give Mercy a 4-2 lead. Elvestad made two late saves to keep Queens off the scoreboard, giving Mercy the win.
Mercy held a 23-15 edge in shots and Queens held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 30th when they host Daemen for Senior Day at 3 p.m.
