DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2021) – Led by the game-winning goal in the first minute of the second overtime period from junior David Breitenbach (Mannheim, Germany/Barton College), off an assist from senior Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge), the Mercy College men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over ECC foe Daemen College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, the Mavericks honored seniors Felipe Baeza (Santiago, Chile/USC Upstate), Rainiero Salas (Panama City, Panama/Alderson Broaddus University), Jones and Tormod Simonsen (Oslo, Norway/Seton Hill University).
The Mavericks (8-4-2, 4-2-2 ECC) have won four games in a row and move into a tie for the fourth and final ECC Tournament spot with one ECC game to play. The Wildcats (4-10, 2-6 ECC) have dropped three of their last four games.
Breitenbach scored his first goal as a Maverick and graduate student Pau Echarri (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Ceu San Pablo) netted his sixth goal of the season. Salas and Jones added assists and Baeza made four saves to earn the win in goal.
Daemen was led by Arthur Djengue who scored and by Marcos Escobar who had nine saves.
Both goalkeepers made a pair of saves in the first six minutes of action to keep the game scoreless. The Wildcats broke the scoreless tie in the 15th minute when Derek Bartlo sent a cross from right to left and Djengue put the ball into the net to make it 1-0.
Mercy forced Escobar to make three more saves before Echarri tied the game at 1-1 in the 30th minute after a Salas corner kick. Escobar made two more saves and Baeza added a save of his own to keep the game tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Each goalie made a save in the second half to keep the game tied at 1-1, sending the contest into overtime.
Mercy recorded all four shots in the first overtime period, but could not score, sending the game into a second overtime.
The Mavericks wasted little time in finishing the game off as Breitenbach found the back of the net following a Jones cross just 55 seconds into the period, giving Mercy a 2-1 win.
Mercy held a 31-7 edge in shots and 11-5 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 4th when they host Dominican at 2 p.m.
