DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 4, 2021) – Despite a goal from freshman Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Verbo Divino), the Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Dominican College on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-5-2) see their four-game winning streak come to an end and lose to the Chargers (10-5-2) for the first time since 2014.
Penafiel recorded his second goal of the season and junior Jens Ovreseth (Oslo, Norway/Davis & Elkins College) dished out his first assist of the season. Graduate student Felipe Baeza (Santiago, Chile/USC Upstate) made four saves to take the loss.
Dominican was led by Maximino Martinez and Antonio Zhu Sanchez who both scored. Lucas Silva Pereria made seven saves to earn the win.
The Mavericks forced Silva Pereria to make a pair of early saves to keep the game scoreless. Silva Pereria made a save on a Pau Echarri (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Ceu San Pablo) shot in the 27th minute, but Ovreseth got the rebound and passed to Penafiel, who fired the ball into the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
It remained 1-0 at halftime with Silva Pereria making four saves and Baeza stopping one shot.
Junior Matthias Kuhn (Viernheim, Germany/University of Mannheim) had a great chance in the opening minute of the second half, but Silva Pereria made the save to keep it 1-0. The Chargers evened the score at 1-1 in the 66th minute on a Martinez goal from Zhu Sanchez.
Neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of regulation and the game went to overtime.
The Chargers went on to win the game in the 94th minute when Nicholas Julien sent a cross and Zhu Sanchez finished to give Dominican the 2-1 overtime win.
Dominican held an 18-15 edge in shots and an 11-6 edge in corner kicks.
