Game Preview: Field Hockey Hosts Molloy on Wednesday

Mercy earned a 1-0 win over Molloy on September 5, 2021.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 3-2 Senior Day overtime win over Franklin Pierce on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by graduate student Nicole Cotton who scored the game-winning goal and sophomore Ally Schreck and junior Alyssa Sacco also scored. Freshman Kasey Volz added a career-high two assists and senior Lauren Viscione made 14 saves to earn the win. Mercy is 8-1 all-time against Molloy with the lone loss coming in 2018. Cotton leads the team with four goals and eight points and Volz is second on the team with seven points by way of two goals and a team-high three assists. Schreck is third on the team with five points on two goals and one assist. Junior Katie Kreider has four points on two goals and Sacco has four points on a goal and two assists. Sophomore Rachel Palladino and junior Lily Sherry also have goals. Sophomore Kelly Rosenfeld has two assists and sophomore Rieley Fitzgerald also has an assist. Viscione is currently 2-9 in goal with 109 saves and a .747 save percentage in 11 starts. The senior currently ranks third in the NE10 in saves.  

The Mavericks are looking to qualify for the NE10 Tournament for the first time in just their second year as members of the conference. Mercy won three NE10 games in their inaugural season as members in 2019 and will look to increase that number in 2021. The Mavericks have been picked 14th in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll but look to prove the coaches wrong. First-year Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola returns Sacco who was named to the NE10 All-Rookie Team in 2019 after leading the team with three goals and three assists for nine points. Sherry also returns after appearing in 16 games in 2019, recording the game-winning goal against Pace. Also coming back is Kreider who scored two goals in 2019, Cotton and senior Savanna James also return after scoring goals in 2019. Senior Briannagh Smith returns after starting in 11 games in 2019 with one assist. Viscione and senior Cydney Wolff are back in goal for the Mavericks. Viscione made 154 saves in 2019 with two shutouts and a .782 save percentage in 16 starts. Also returning from the 2019 team are juniors Christy Falisi and Taylor Durkin. Spinazzola will also rely upon sophomores Kate Ringstad, Rosenfeld, Rory McComb, Ally Schreck, Kirk, Palladino, Kyra Reyes, Fitzgerald, Devlin and freshmen Volz, Jessica Evans and Alexandra Giordano.

Scouting the Lions

Molloy enters Wednesday's game winless on the year. The Lions are coming off a 9-0 loss at No. 4 Assumption on Saturday. Molloy was picked No. 15 in the NE10 Coaches' Poll after going 1-17 in 2019. Molloy is coached by Mercy alum Catherine Brudi who is in her first season as head coach. The Lions are led by junior Kyra Dalli who has a team-high three goals and six points on the year. Freshman Kassandra Sakhat who has a team-high two assists. Sophomore Ally Saigh is 0-7 in goal with 73 saves and a .682 save percentage and freshman Kelsey Price is 0-3 in goal with 26 saves and a .650 save percentage.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Saturday, October 23rd when they host Assumption at 1 p.m.
