LoNigro Scores as Women's Soccer Plays at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2021) – Despite a goal from junior Carli LoNigro (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), the Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Holy Family University on Monday afternoon at New Tiger Field.

The Mavericks (6-3-4) have lost two games in a row, while the Tigers (9-2-2) have won two straight games and beat Mercy for the first time.

LoNigro recorded her second goal of the year and graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) dished out her first assist of the year. Senior Veronica Scruggs (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made one save to take the loss in goal.

Holy Family was led by Jacqueline Ziegler and Carly Nothnagel who both scored. Alayna McSeed made four saves to earn the win.

LoNigro recorded two shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of action with McSeed stopping both to keep the game scoreless. LoNigro finally found the back of the net in the 24th minute when she fired a shot from the middle of the box after being setup by Bermudez to make it 1-0.

It remained 1-0 heading into halftime with the Mercy defense not allowing a Holy Family shot on goal.

The Tigers evened the score at 1-1 in the 56th minute when Ziegler scored off a header following a corner kick.

McSeed and Scruggs both made a save to close out the half, sending the game into overtime tied at 1-1.

The overtime period was scoreless for five minutes before Nothnagel scored the game-winner following a cross by Ziegler and Hannah Florentino, giving Holy Family the 2-1 overtime win.

Holy Family held an 11-9 edge in shots and Mercy held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, October 22nd when they host Queens at 11 a.m.
