DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2021) – Powered by goals from senior Fernanda Castro (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) and juniors Dominique Bono (Islip, N.Y./New York Tech) and Carli LoNigro (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over ECC foe Queens College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field in a Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
The Mavericks (7-3-4, 6-1 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak and secure their eighth straight berth into the ECC Tournament, while the Knights (3-6-1, 2-4 ECC) have dropped three games in a row.
Castro recorded her first goal of the season and Bono and LoNigro both found the back of the net for the third time this season. Sophomores Marlene Avalos (San Diego, Calif./Otay Ranch) and Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin) and senior Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) had assists and senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made five saves to earn the win in goal.
Queens was led by Marina Pappas who scored and by Nikoletta Pravatta who made 12 saves to take the loss.
Castro scored the game's first goal in the 10th minute of action on a shot from distance following a cross from Avalos, which made it 1-0.
It remained 1-0 until the 32nd minute when Rosa fed Bono a thru ball and Bono finished on the right side to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.
The score remained 2-0 at halftime with Mercy holding an 8-2 edge in shots.
Queens made it 2-1 when Pappas scored off a Jacklyn Diel rebound to get the Knights within one. Torres made two saves after the Queens goal to keep the visitors from tying the game.
The Mavericks tacked on an insurance goal in the 75th minute when LoNigro fired home a rebound off a McKail shot, which made it 3-1. Mercy cruised the rest of the way to secure the win.
Mercy held a 22-10 edge in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 26th when they host Le Moyne at 3 p.m.
