DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2021) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 59th minute from junior Dominique Bono (Islip, N.Y./New York Tech), off an assist from sophomore Kayla Camacho (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream), the Mercy College women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 1-0 win over ECC foe Daemen College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, the Mavericks recognized seniors Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada), Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), Sydney Cooper (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos), Fernanda Castro (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista), Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon), Juliana Conforti (East Northport, N.Y./Northport), Veronica Scruggs (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge).
The Mavericks (8-3-4, 7-1 ECC) have won two games in a row and hand the Wildcats (8-5-1, 6-1-1 ECC) their first ECC loss of the season. Mercy moves into second place in the ECC standings with the win. The top two seeds in the ECC Tournament host Semifinal matchups on November 11th.
Bono now has four goals on the year and Camacho picked up her second assist of the season. Torres made three saves to earn the shutout win.
Daemen was led by Tatyjana Scalisi and Grace Stranahan who both had a team-high two shots. Tori DeLappi made four saves to take the loss.
Torres made a save just 17 seconds into the game on a high shot from Madita Zeitz to keep the game scoreless. Sophomore Marlene Avalos (San Diego, Calif./Otay Ranch) and McKail forced DeLappi to make two saves in the first half, keeping the game tied at 0-0 at halftime.
DeLappi opened the second half with another save, but the Mavericks would break the scoreless tie in the 59th minute. After a Daemen turnover, Camacho fed Bono who found the back of the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
Torres made two late saves to keep Daemen from scoring and Mercy came away with the win.
Mercy held a 10-7 edge in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 6th when they play at D'Youville at 12 p.m.
