COLCHESTER, Vt. (Oct. 30, 2021) – Despite a game-high four saves from senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to NE10 foe Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at Duffy Field.
The Mavericks (4-13, 3-11 NE10) see their season come to an end with four straight losses, while the Purple Knights (5-13, 4-10 NE10) snap a seven-game losing streak with the win.
Viscione made four saves in 30 minutes of action and freshman Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) made two saves in the second half. Sophomores Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and freshman Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) recorded a shot on goal.
Saint Michael's was led by Jenna Puleo who had a team-high three goals with one assist. Riley O'Connor made three saves to earn the win.
The Purple Knights took an early 1-0 lead in the 4th minute following Puleo's first goal of the day. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first quarter with Viscione making one save in the frame.
Viscione made three more saves in the second quarter to keep the game at 1-0 heading into halftime.
Giordano made two early saves in the third quarter but Erickson Richard gave the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute following a penalty corner. Saint Michael's added on two more goals in the frame to head into the fourth quarter up, 4-0.
Mercy had their best chance to score in the beginning of the fourth quarter with Volz forcing an Erin Hammer defensive save, Rosenfeld hitting the post with a shot and forcing O'Connor to make a save. Saint Michael's scored their final goal of the game in the 50th minute when Puleo netted her final goal of the day to make it 5-0.
Mercy held a 13-12 edge in shots and a 9-7 edge in penalty corners.
