DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2021) – Powered by a shutout from freshman Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 0-0 double-overtime tie against ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-4-2, 1-2-2 ECC) remain winless since September 18th, while the Firebirds (5-4-1, 4-0-1 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.
Elvestad made two saves to earn his third shutout of the season. Senior Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) and junior David Breitenbach (Mannheim, Germany/Barton College) both had a shot on goal.
Javier Abadia Torres made two saves to post a shutout.
Jones recorded the lone shot on goal of the first half in the 42nd minute. Mercy held a 6-1 edge in shots in the opening half and the teams headed into halftime scoreless.
Breitenbach forced Abadia Torres to make another save in the 60th minute. The Firebirds would not record a shot on goal in regulation and the teams remained scoreless after regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Elvestad made his first save of the day in the opening minute of the first overtime to keep the game scoreless. UDC recorded the only two shots of the period and could not score, sending the game into a second overtime.
Mercy recorded the first two shots of the second overtime before Elvestad made another save to keep the game scoreless. Neither team could find the back of the net and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
Mercy held a 13-8 edge in shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 16th when they play at Molloy at 12 p.m.
