DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 17, 2021) – Despite a double-double from sophomore Jayden Dewaal (Toronto, Ontario/Trinidad State Junior College) in his Mercy debut, the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 73-62 decision to Post University in their 2021-22 season opener on Wednesday night at Victory Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (0-1) drop their season opener, while the Eagles (2-1) move over .500 with the win.
Dewaal had a team-high 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds on 9-for-17 shooting. Junior James Taylor Jr. (South Chesterfield, Va./Neosho County CC) had 15 points and six rebounds and junior Elijah Mitchell (Edison, N.J./Monroe College) had 12 points and five steals.
Post was led by David Jasson who had a game-high 22 points.
Mercy held a 14-13 lead at the 13:22 mark of the first half following a Dewaal layup. The Eagles followed with four straight point to take a 17-14 lead with 11:59 on the clock. Mercy answered with a 6-0 run, capped off by a Taylor Jr. three, to take a 20-17 lead with 6:38 left in the half.
Mercy later held a 22-19 lead after a Taylor Jr. jumper. Post responded with a 9-0 run to take a 28-22 lead with four minutes remaining in the half. The Eagles increased the lead to seven, 33-26, but the Mavericks closed the half on a 6-2 run to head into halftime down just three, 35-32.
The Mavericks opened the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 39-37 lead with 17:21 remaining. Post ensued with a 12-0 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 49-39, with 14 minutes left. Taylor Jr. cut the lead to seven with another three, but the visitors answered with a 13-4 run to take their largest lead of the game, 62-46, with 8:16 on the clock.
Mercy would cut the deficit to nine on two separate occasions but could not get any closer and Post came away with the win.
Mercy shot 39.4 percent (26-for-66) from the floor, 26.3 percent (5-for-19) from downtown and 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from the foul line. Post shot 47.5 percent (29-for-61) from the field, 36.0 percent (9-for-25) from downtown and 75.0 percent (6-for-8) from the charity stripe. Post held a 38-37 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 20th when they play at Dominican at 7:30 p.m.
