Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off an 84-63 win over Felician in their home opener on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Katie Wall who had a game-high 23 points and seven assists. Senior Taysha Bender had 21 points and junior Asha Talib had a double-double by way of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Wall was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday after averaging 19.0 points, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game in two games last week. The Mavericks are looking to start 2-2 for the first time since 2017-18. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season and earned their first win over St. Thomas Aquinas since 2009. Wall ranks first in the ECC in points per game (20.3), is second in assists (5.0) and leads the ECC in steals per game (4.0). Bender ranks third in the conference in points per game (18.3) and is shooting 44.9 percent from the floor with 2.0 made threes per game. Junior Kellie Nudd is averaging 10.0 points per game and is averaging 5.7 rebounds per game. Talib is posting 8.7 points per game and a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game. Mercy currently leads the ECC in points per game (72.0), is second in steals per game (12.7) and ranks third in the ECC with a 35.0 percent three-point field goal percentage.
Scouting the Lightning
Goldey-Beacom has opened their 2021-22 season with back-to-back wins against Saint Michael's and Saint Rose. The Lightning were picked in a tie for fifth in the CACC South Division Coaches' Poll after going 9-18 in 2019-20. Goldey-Beacom is led by Alexis Harrison who is averaging 14.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Sarah Round is posting 12.0 points per game and Briana Seltzer is netting 9.5 points per game. Janiya Stevens is averaging a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game and Harrison is averaging a team-high 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals per game.
