Game Preview: Women's Basketball Hosts Assumption on Sunday

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 70-60 loss to Caldwell on Tuesday. The Mavericks were led by sophomore Maria Tedesco who had a career-high 17 points with eight rebounds. Senior Taysha Bender had 17 points and junior Katie Wall had a near triple-double with 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Wall was named ECC Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 24.0 points per game on 62.5 percent shooting with 5.5 assists per game. Junior Asha Talib was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 11.0 points and a team-high 11.5 rebounds per game. The Mavericks are looking to start 3-3 for the first time since 2019-20. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season and earned their first win over St. Thomas Aquinas since 2009. Mercy is looking to beat Assumption for the first time since December 7, 1985. Sunday's meeting will be just the fifth meeting all-time between the two schools. Wall ranks first in the ECC in points per game (19.2), is second in assists (5.4) and leads the ECC in steals per game (3.0). Senior Taysha Bender ranks third in the conference in points per game (18.0) and is shooting 40.8 percent from the floor with 2.2 made threes per game. Junior Kellie Nudd is averaging 8.6 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game. Talib is posting 7.0 points per game and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked in the top 10 in the ECC in rebounds per game. Mercy currently leads the ECC in points per game (68.0), is second in steals per game (10.0) and leads the ECC with 33 made threes.

Scouting the Greyhounds

Assumption is coming off a 68-65 win over Dominican on Saturday. The Greyhounds were picked fifth in the NE10 Northeast Division Coaches' Poll after going 14-15 in 2019-20, advancing to the NE10 Championship Quarterfinals. Assumption is led by graduate student Meghan Cramb who is averaging a team-high 11.2 points per game and shoots a team-best 44.4 percent from downtown. Sophomore Amanda Mieczkowski is second on the team with 9.2 points per game on 51.7 percent shooting from the floor and junior Monica Spain is posting 8.8 points per game. Spain also averages 6.3 rebounds and a team-high 2.0 steals per game. Sophomore Anna Davis records a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game and freshman Marina Callahan averages a team-high 1.6 blocks per game.
