DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 28, 2021) – Despite a team-high 15 points from junior Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara), the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered an 87-57 setback to Pace University on Sunday afternoon at Victory Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (0-5) have dropped five straight games, while the Setters (6-0) remain unbeaten on the season.
Kirkland had 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting and junior Elijah Mitchell (Edison, N.J./Monroe College) had 13 points and three steals. Junior James Taylor Jr. (South Chesterfield, Va./Neosho County CC) had 11 points and sophomore Alex May (Englewood, N.J./St. Francis College (Brooklyn)) had eight points.
Pace was led by Brandon Jacobs who had a game-high 25 points.
The Setters held a 14-11 lead with 14:25 left in the first half after a pair of Mitchell free throws cut the Pace lead to three. Pace followed with a 15-0 run to increase their lead to 18, 29-11, with 8:41 left in the half.
Mercy later cut the deficit to 16, 36-20, after a Mitchell free throw, but the Setters closed out the half on an 11-3 run to take a 47-23 lead at halftime.
Pace led by double digits for the remainder of the game, increasing the lead to a game-high 34 points on two occasions, to come away with the win.
Mercy shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the floor, 35.0 percent (7-for-20) from downtown and 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from the foul line. Pace shot 59.6 percent (31-for-52) from the field, 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from beyond the arc and 81.0 percent (17-for-21) from the charity stripe. Pace held a 37-28 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, December 1st when they play at Mansfield at 5:30 p.m.
