DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 28, 2021) – Despite a team-high 17 points from junior Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 66-54 decision to Assumption University on Sunday afternoon at Victory Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (2-4) have dropped two games in a row, while the Greyhounds (4-2) have won two games in a row.
Wall had a team-high 17 points with five rebounds and five assists. Junior Kellie Nudd (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) had 13 points and five rebounds and junior Briana Barnard (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had nine points.
Assumption was led by Meghan Cramb who had a game-high 21 points.
Assumption jumped out to an 11-4 lead with 7:31 left in the first quarter. Mercy battled back and closed the quarter on a 13-2 run, capped off by a Wall three, to take a 17-13 lead after the first quarter.
Mercy held a 21-17 lead after a Wall layup with 7:39 remaining in the half. Assumption followed with five straight points to take a 22-21 lead just over a minute later. The Mavericks later retook the lead at 28-26 following a Barnard jumper with 2:26 on the clock. The Greyhounds ended the half on an 8-3 run to take a 34-31 lead at halftime.
A jumper by Nudd to open the third quarter cut the Assumption lead to one, 34-33. The Greyhounds scored the next four points to take a 38-33 lead with 7:33 left in the period. Mercy followed with an 8-2 run, capped off by a Nudd three, to take a 41-40 lead with 3:54 on the clock. Assumption then went on a 9-3 run to take a 49-44 lead before a Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) layup at the buzzer made it 49-46 in favor of the Greyhounds after three quarters of play.
The Mavericks opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 52-49 lead with seven minutes remaining following a Nudd jumper. Assumption would close the game on a 17-2 run to retake the lead and pull away for the win.
Mercy shot 39.6 percent (21-for-53) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from downtown and 70.0 percent (7-for-10) from the foul line. Assumption shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-for-23) from beyond the arc and 86.7 percent (13-for-15) from the charity stripe. Assumption held a 37-33 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, December 4th when they play at Bloomfield at 1 p.m.
