Game Preview: Women's Basketball Plays at Bridgeport on Sunday

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 68-63 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Friday. The win was the first ever against the Redhawks. Mercy had been 0-16 against Roberts Wesleyan prior to Friday's game. The Mavericks were led by senior Taysha Bender who had 19 points and six rebounds. Junior Kellie Nudd had 17 points and junior Asha Talib had 10 points and a team-high-tying seven rebounds. Mercy has started ECC play 2-0 for the first time since 1992-93 and is looking to start 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 1992-93. Mercy is looking for their first win at Bridgeport since February 17, 2018. The Mavericks are 4-28 against Bridgeport in their last 32 meetings. Junior Katie Wall is a one-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time Honor Roll recipient. Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Wall ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game (16.2), second in assists (4.4) and is fourth in steals per game (2.4). Bender ranks fifth in the conference in points per game (15.5) with two made threes per game. Nudd is averaging 10.3 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in six games this year. Talib is posting 5.5 points per game and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked 12th in the ECC in rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.9 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year. Mercy is currently third in the ECC in steals per game (8.0).

Scouting the Purple Knights

Bridgeport is coming off a 64-49 loss at St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday. The Purple Knights have lost four straight games after defeating previously undefeated Pace on December 3rd. Bridgeport was picked eighth in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 6-23 in 2019-20. Senior Samirah Henderson leads the Purple Knights with 19.0 points per game on 50.4 percent shooting. The guard is third in the ECC in points per game and shoots an ECC-best 51.6 percent from downtown. Sophomore Brianna Meekins averages 13.4 points per game and senior Janiece Loney posts 12.4 points per game. Junior Stephanie McBride also averages double figures with 11.0 points per game and a team-high 9.9 rebounds per game. McBride is second in the ECC in rebounds per game.
