Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 66-54 loss to Assumption on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by junior Katie Wall who had a team-high 17 points with five rebounds and five assists. Junior Kellie Nudd had 13 points and junior Briana Barnard had nine points. Wall is a one-time ECC Player of the Week and one-time Honor Roll recipient. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd. The Mavericks are looking to get off to their best seven-game start since 2019-20 when they started 4-3. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season and earned their first win over St. Thomas Aquinas since 2009. Mercy is looking to improve to 2-1 all-time against Bloomfield. The Mavericks are playing at Bloomfield for the first time with the two previous meetings coming at neutral sites in 2015 and 2017. Wall ranks first in the ECC in points per game (18.8), is second in assists (5.3) and is third in steals per game (2.5). Senior Taysha Bender ranks third in the conference in points per game (18.0) and is shooting 40.8 percent from the floor with 2.2 made threes per game. Junior Kellie Nudd is averaging 9.3 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game. Talib is posting 6.7 points per game and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked in the top 10 in the ECC in rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.2 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in two of her last three games. Mercy currently is third in the ECC in points per game (65.7), is third in steals per game (8.8) and is second in the ECC with 38 made threes.
Scouting the Bears
Bloomfield is coming off a 69-63 loss at Felician on Wednesday. The Bears picked up their first win of the season on Monday with a 63-61 come-from-behind victory over UDC. Bloomfield was picked fourth in the CACC North Division Coaches' Poll after going 6-5 in 2021. In their last full season in 2019-20, the Bears went 6-22. Bloomfield is led by junior DaShanique Ruffin who is averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game on 57.4 percent shooting. Sophomore Myasia Jackson is posting 8.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and seniors Jaylah Bennett and Siani Smith both average 6.5 points per game on the year.
