Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 68-65 loss at Bloomfield on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by junior Katie Wall who had a team-high 20 points, four assists and four steals. Sophomore Maria Tedesco had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds and senior Taysha Bender had eight points. Wall is a one-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time Honor Roll recipient. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd. The Mavericks are looking to start 1-0 in ECC play for the first time since 2009. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season and earned their first win over St. Thomas Aquinas since 2009. Mercy is 3-32 against St. Thomas Aquinas since 2006. Wall ranks first in the ECC in points per game (19.0), is second in assists (5.1) and is second in steals per game (2.7). Senior Taysha Bender ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (16.0) with 2.0 made threes per game. Junior Kellie Nudd is averaging 9.0 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game. Talib is posting 5.7 points per game and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked in the top 10 in the ECC in rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.7 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three of her last four games. Mercy currently is fourth in the ECC in points per game (65.6), is third in steals per game (8.7) and leads the ECC with 44 made threes.
Scouting the Spartans
St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off a 61-52 loss at Chestnut Hill on Sunday. The Spartans went 5-9 last season and were picked third in this year's ECC Coaches' Poll. In their last full season in 2019-20, St. Thomas Aquinas went 21-7. The Spartans are 1-3 on the road this year with their lone win coming against Felician on November 20th. St. Thomas Aquinas is led by seniors Alexa Huertas and Victoria Kurisko who average a team-high 8.3 points per game. Sophomore Angelique Holguin is posting 8.1 points per game on a team-high 44.4 percent shooting with 5.8 rebounds per game. Senior Chanel Brodeur-Muir is netting 8.0 points per game and a team-high 5.9 rebounds per game.
