Game Preview: Women's Basketball Opens up 2021 Season at Molloy This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2021) – The Mercy College women's basketball team opens their 2021 season this weekend when they play at Molloy College in their season opener on Saturday, February 13th at 12 p.m. The Mavericks will then play at their ECC foe again on Sunday, February 14th at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         A span of 350 days between games will come to an end Saturday as the Mavericks open their 2021 season with a road series at Molloy this weekend. Mercy last played on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Bridgeport.

·         Mercy was picked fifth in the ECC Preseason Coaches Poll in January.

·         The Mavericks will look to pick up their first win over Molloy since January 27, 2016 when they earned a 57-54 win at Molloy.

·         Mercy will look to snap an eight-game losing streak to the Lions.

·         In the teams' last meeting on February 19, 2020 the Lions came away with a 71-55 victory.

·         Mercy looks to win their first season opener since defeating Dominican to open up the 2017-18 season.

·         The Mavericks look to win their ECC opener for the first time since 2009.

·         Leading the returners is sophomore Katie Wall who was named ECC Rookie of the Week four times and led the team with 12.0 points and 2.9 assists per game. She also had a team-high 30 steals and 49 threes.

·         Also returning is junior Taysha Bender who averaged 6.9 points per game and was named to the ECC Honor Roll once.

·         Mercy went 2-11 in true road games a year ago.

Scouting the Lions

·         Molloy is currently tied for sixth in the latest D2SIDA East Region Media Poll.

·         Molloy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Coaches Poll in January.

·         The Lions advanced to the final of the ECC Championship and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season.

·         Leading the returners for the Lions is Second Team All-ECC selection Gabriella Aspuru who is averaging 12.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. She was named to the ECC Honor Roll this week after recording a game-high 12 points and seven rebounds at STAC.

·         Also averaging double figures are junior Katie Marquardt and senior Morgan Staab who average 11.0 and 10.0 points per game, respectively.

·         The Lions are playing their first home games of the season but went 13-2 at home last season on their way to going 22-9 on the year.

Next Game

The Mavericks next game is on Wednesday, February 17th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas in an ECC matchup at 5 p.m.
