Game Preview: Women's Basketball Visits St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2021) – The Mercy College women's basketball team resumes action on Wednesday, February 17th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas College at 6 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • Mercy was picked fifth in the ECC Preseason Coaches Poll in January.
  • The Mavericks look to pick up their first win over St. Thomas Aquinas since January 14, 2009. Mercy also looks to pick up their first win at St. Thomas Aquinas since 1985.
  • Mercy will look to snap a 25-game losing streak to the Spartans.
  • In the teams' last meeting on February 1, 2020, the Spartans came away with a 90-57 win in Sparkill.
  • Mercy looks to pick up their first road ECC win since winning at Bridgeport on February 17, 2018.
  • Mercy is led by sophomore Katie Wall who is averaging a team-high 8.0 points per game with 3.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore Briana Barnard and freshman Asya Brandon both average 6.5 points per game and sophomore Brianna Lee is posting 5.5 points per game and a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game.
  • Lee had a team-high nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds at Molloy on Sunday.
  • Mercy is currently first in the nation in three-point field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 14.3 percent shooting from downtown.
  • The Mavericks are also ranked No. 28 nationally in scoring defense (59.0).
Scouting the Spartans
  • St. Thomas Aquinas was picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll in January after going 21-7 last year. The Spartans won the ECC Co-Regular Season Championship in 2020.
  • The Spartans have won two of their first three ECC games and are coming off a 60-57 victory over Roberts Wesleyan in Sparkill on Sunday. St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Alexa Huertas who had a team-high 19 points.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas is 2-2 at home so far this year after going 12-3 at home last season.
  • Leading the Spartans on the season is junior Alexa Huertas who is averaging a team-high 11.7 points per game. She was named ECC Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in two games last week. Also contributing for the Spartans is junior Victoria Kurisko who is posting 8.5 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game.
  • Freshmen Julia Reggio and Angelique Holguin have both been named ECC Rookie of the Week once and are averaging 4.7 and 4.3 points per game, respectively.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas is ranked No. 23 nationally in scoring defense (58.3) and No. 39 in turnovers forced per game (19.67). 
Next Game
The Mavericks next game is on Saturday, February 20th when they host Daemen in an ECC matchup at 1 p.m.
