AMHERST, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2021) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered an 82-51 setback to ECC foe Daemen College on Saturday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (1-5, 1-5 ECC) have dropped two straight games, while the Wildcats (5-3, 5-1 ECC) has won three straight games.
Junior James Taylor Jr. (South Chesterfield, Va./Neosho County CC) led the way for Mercy with a team-high 16 points on 4-for-8 shooting from downtown. Freshman Kerwin Prince (Waterbury, Conn./Notre Dame West Haven Prep) recorded a double-double by way of 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds on 7-for-12 shooting. Senior Dayvon Cuffey (Baltimore, Md./Anne Arundel CC) netted 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting to round out the three Mavericks scoring in double figures.
Daemen was led by Sean Fasoyiro who had a game-high 23 points.
The Wildcats opened the game on an 11-2 run and were ahead 16-7 with 13:51 left in the half, following a Prince layup. Daemen ensued with a 15-4 run to increase the lead to 20, 31-11, at the 8:21 mark of the opening half.
Mercy cut the deficit to 14, 31-17, following a Prince jumper but the hosts answered with back-to-back threes and headed into halftime with a 44-27 lead.
Daemen started the second half with four straight points to take a 48-27 lead. A Taylor three with 16:07 on the clock made it a 15-point game, 50-35, but the Wildcats responded with a 15-2 run to build their lead to 28, 65-37, with 12:36 left.
The Wildcats put the lead to a game-high 35 points, 77-42, at the 5:51 mark and led by double digits the rest of the way to secure the win.
Mercy shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the floor, 26.3 percent (5-for-19) from downtown and 33.3 percent (2-for-6) from the foul line. Daemen shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) from the field, 42.4 percent (14-for-33) from beyond the arc and 88.9 percent (8-for-9) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 37-28 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, February 27th when they host D'Youville at 1 p.m.
