Kearnan Records 100th Career Point as No. 9 Men's Lacrosse Earns 19-6 Win Over Dominican in Season Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 5, 2021) – Powered by junior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) recording his 100th career point, the No. 9 Mercy College men's lacrosse team opened its 2021 season with a 19-6 victory over Dominican College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (1-0) win their third straight season opener, while the Chargers (0-1) open their season with a loss.

Kearnan finished with five points on three goals and two assists and now has 101 career points with 68 coming during his freshman year at Newberry College. He also added four ground balls and senior Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had a game-high six points on two goals and four assists. Junior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had three goals and two assists and graduate student Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) finished with two goals and an assist. McPartland is now one goal shy of 100 for his career. Sophomore Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had a goal and an assist and graduate student Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), sophomores TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Matt Gaughan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), senior Marty Shargel (Agoura Hills, Calif./Onondaga CC), freshmen Damiano Ferrara (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown), Justin DeMonte (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), Andrew Calabria (Sachem, N.Y./Sachem North) and Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary School) also scored. Freshman Kyle Gabrinowitz (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) added an assist and freshman Tyler Pjatak (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) had a team-high two caused turnovers. Rey went 14-for-19 on face-offs with a game-high eight ground balls and junior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made eight saves in the first 35:35 minutes of action to earn the win.

Dominican was led by Luke Martini who had a game-high-tying three goals.

Mercy was playing their first game in 360 days but showed little rust early on as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead with 11:18 left in the first quarter. Kearnan got the scoring started just under a minute in and Gibbons followed with his first of the day following an assist from McPartland, which made it 2-0 less than two minutes in. Heyder followed with another goal to make it 3-0 and Gibbons and Scorcia posted back-to-back goals to make it 5-0. Kearnan later made it 6-0 with his second goal of the day at the 6:08 mark of the opening quarter. Mercy held the Chargers scoreless in the first quarter, heading into the second quarter up, 6-0.

Dominican scored the first goal of the second quarter to make it 6-1 before McPartland and Kearnan netted back-to-back goals to give Mercy an 8-1 lead with 10:54 left in the first half. Kearnan's goal at the 10:54 mark would be his 100th career point. The Chargers scored less than a minute later to make it 8-2, but Shargel scored a man-up goal with 2:32 on the clock to give Mercy a 9-2 lead at halftime.

The Mavericks continued to dominate in the third quarter, scoring the quarter's first six goals to increase the lead to 15-2 with 5:41 left in the period. Guglielmo got the scoring started and Gibbons, Gaughan, Scorcia, McPartland and Rey ensued with goals to give the Mavericks a commanding lead. Dominican scored the final goal of the quarter to make it 15-3 after three quarters of play.

Dominican scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 10, 15-5, with 12:21 left to play. Caskenette tallied his first goal at the 5:29 mark to make it 16-5 before Martini netted another goal to make it 16-6. Calabria, DeMonte and Ferrara all netted their first collegiate goals to finish out the scoring for the Mavericks.

Mercy held a 46-33 edge in shots, a 37-18 edge in ground balls and won 21-of-29 face-offs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 13th when they play at Georgian Court at 3:30 p.m.
