DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2021) – Despite an RBI from senior Francisco Paulino (Haina San Cristobal, Dominican Republic/Monroe College) and sophomore Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to ECC foe RV St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-6, 4-3 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Spartans (10-0, 4-0 ECC) remain unbeaten on the year.
Giblin and Paulino each had an RBI and Giblin also had a run scored. Sophomore Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 2-for-4 with a run and juniors Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and Charles Lebron (Brooklyn, N.Y./Franklin Pierce University) each had a hit. Sophomore Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched six innings with just one earned run allowed to take the loss. Freshman Max Rank (Westwood, N.J./Westwood JR/SR) pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief and freshman Gaetano Pennisi (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and junior Jonathan Diforio (Harrison, N.Y./University of Delaware) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
The Spartans were led by Andrew Jemison who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Aaron Dona pitched seven innings with two runs allowed to earn the win.
STAC got on the board first in the top of the first when Jemison recorded an RBI single to make it 1-0. Mercy tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. Giblin walked to lead off the inning and was sacrificed over to second. Graduate student Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) then walked before Lebron singled to load the bases. Paulino then plated Giblin following a fielder's choice to make it 1-1 after one inning.
The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second following a Christopher Conti home run.
It remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when STAC scored four runs on two hits and two Mercy errors to take a 6-1 lead.
Mercy plated a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2. Glennerster led off the inning with a double and would later score following a Giblin ground out to first.
The Spartans made it 7-2 in the top of the ninth on a Jemison sacrifice fly. Mercy loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but a fielder's choice ended the game.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 15th when they play at Felician at 3 p.m.
