Mackie and Bishop Combine for 10 Goals as No. 18 Women's Lacrosse Defeats Georgian Court, 18-9

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Apr. 16, 2021) – Powered by a game-high five goals from graduate student Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) and junior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), the No. 18 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned an 18-9 victory over Georgian Court University on Friday afternoon.

The Mavericks (6-1) have won four games in a row, while the Lions (4-2) drop both meetings this season with Mercy.

Mackie had a career-high five goals and added three draw controls. Bishop also had a career-high-tying five goals and junior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had two goals and an assist. Junior Erin Chalich (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and freshman Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) each had a goal and an assist. Senior Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and junior Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip) added a goal and an assist and sophomores Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) and Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) also scored. Junior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) had an assist to go along with a team-high four caused turnovers. Junior Hunter Savino (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) had a team-high five ground balls to go with three caused turnovers. Senior Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a team-high eight draw controls. Senior Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) made three saves in the first half to earn the win. Junior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made six saves in the second half.

Georgian Court was led by Amanda Marino and Shaine Sauter who each had two goals and an assist. Alexis Hahn made six saves to take the loss.

Mercy jumped all over the Lions to start the game, opening with the game's first five goals to take a 5-0 lead just under five minutes in. Grzelaczyk got the scoring started at the 28:53 mark and Bishop netted back-to-back goals to make it 3-0. Mackie and Cummings each found the back of the net to give Mercy an early 5-0 lead.

Madison Heck scored for the Lions to make it 5-1 with 24:50 left in the half. However, any momentum from the goal was short-lived as Mercy answered with four straight goals to take a 9-1 lead. Chalich, Mackie, Shimborske and Corley all scored to give the Mavericks a commanding lead.

The Lions came back with two straight goals to make it 9-3, but Mercy closed the half with two of the final three goals to make it 11-4 at halftime. Corace netted her goal at the 2:41 mark and Grzelaczyk tallied her second goal with just 29 seconds left.

Heck made it 11-5 to open the second half, but the Mavericks rattled off four straight goals to take a 15-5 lead with 19:21 left. Mackie and Bishop each scored twice with Mackie scoring a man-down goal to give Mercy a 10-goal lead. Georgian Court scored four straight goals to get within 15-9. However, Bishop, Rosenfeld and Mackie scored the game's final three goals to give Mercy the convincing 18-9 victory.

Mercy held a 32-20 edge in shots, a 19-12 edge in ground balls and an 18-12 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 21st when they play at Bridgeport at 6 p.m.
