Brady Records Career-High Seven Caused Turnovers and 10 Ground Balls as No. 18 Women's Lacrosse Defeats Molloy, 15-6

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2021) – Powered by a career-high seven caused turnovers and 10 ground balls from junior Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), the No. 18 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 15-6 win over ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (8-1, 3-0 ECC) have won six games in a row, while the Lions (3-6, 2-2 ECC) drop both meetings to Mercy this season.

Junior Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists and senior Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had three goals and one assist. Sophomore Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) had two goals and two assists and junior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had two goals and one assist. Graduate student Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport), juniors Erin Chalich (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and freshman Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) each had a goal and an assist. Junior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) added a goal and junior Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had three caused turnovers. Senior Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) played the first half in goal and made one save to earn the win. Junior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made three saves in the second half.

Molloy was led by Abbie Bellport who had a team-high three goals. Mary-Kate Sweeney made eight saves to take the loss.

Mercy entered the game on a five-game winning streak and continued to roll, scoring the game's first six goals to take a 6-0 lead with 11:38 left in the opening half. Cummings got the scoring started at the 26:51 mark and Mackie made it 2-0 three minutes later. Corace followed with back-to-back goals to make it 4-0 and Grzelaczyk and Cummings capped off the run with two more goals.

Molloy finally got on the scoreboard with 7:24 on the clock. However, Keenan answered just over two minutes later to make it 7-1. Bellport made it 7-2 with four minutes left before Shimborske scored an unassisted goal with 3:04 on the clock to give Mercy an 8-2 lead at halftime.

The Lions scored the first two goals of the second half to make it 8-4 with 28:48 left to play. Mercy quickly rattled off five straight goals to increase the lead to 13-4 with 20:36 left, ending any hope of a comeback for Molloy. Cummings, Rosenfeld, Shimborske, Chalich and Bishop all scored to give the Mavericks a nine-goal lead.

Bellport made it 13-5 with her third of the day, but Bishop and Corace netted back-to-back goals to give Mercy a 15-5 lead with 3:20 left. A late goal by Molloy was not enough and the Mavericks came away with the win.

Mercy held a 28-20 edge in shots and a 24-16 edge in ground balls. Molloy held a 14-8 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host D'Youville for Senior Day at 11 a.m.
