Corace Records 100th Career Point as No. 18 Women's Lacrosse Defeats Georgian Court, 18-10

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2021) – Powered by senior Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) recording her 100th career point, the No. 18 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned an 18-10 victory over Georgian Court University on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-1) have won three games in a row, while the Lions (3-1) suffer their first loss of the season.

Corace had a game-high four goals to go along with two assists. She now has 101 career points and becomes the 12th Maverick in program history to record 100 points. Junior Erin Chalich (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had a career-high eight points on three goals and a game-high five assists. Junior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) netted three goals with one assist and sophomore Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) recorded two goals and one assist. Freshman Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had a goal and an assist and juniors Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip), Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), sophomore Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) and freshman Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) also scored. Graduate student Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) dished out two assists and juniors Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) each had a team-high three caused turnovers. Bigilin added four draw controls and senior Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a team-high five draw controls. Senior Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) played the first half in goal and made two saves to improve to 5-0 on the year. Junior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made six saves in the second half.

Georgian Court was led by Shaine Sauter who had a team-high four points on three goals and an assist. Alexis Hahn made 11 saves to take the loss.

Bishop got the scoring started at the 28:00 mark of the first half. Sauter answered with the Lions first goal less than a minute later to make it 1-1. Corace, Chalich, Keenan and Lopreato each netted a goal as Mercy scored the next four goals to take a 5-1 lead with 12:06 left in the opening half.

The Lions closed the deficit to two, 5-3, after back-to-back goals, but Corace and Shimborske answered with back-to-back goals of their own to increase the Mercy lead back to four, 7-3, with 7:41 on the clock. Two straight goals from Georgian Court once again got them back to within two, 7-5. However, Shimborske scored the final goal of the half to put Mercy ahead 8-5 at halftime.

Mercy started the second half on a roll, scoring the first five goals of the half to build a 13-5 lead. Grzelaczyk, Bishop, Corace and Rosenfeld all scored to start the run and Bishop capped it off with her final goal of the day. A Madison Heck goal made it 13-6 before Chalich scored to make it 14-6. Corace was credited with the assist on the goal, recording her 100th career point on the play. The Lions made it 14-7 before Chalich and Corley each scored to give the Mavericks a 16-7 lead. After a Sauter goal made it 16-8, Corace recorded her 101st career point on her fourth goal of the day at the 7:19 mark to give Mercy a 17-8 lead.

Georgian Court scored two of the final three goals with Cummings scoring the Mavericks goal. However, it was not enough as Mercy earned the impressive victory.

Mercy held a 37-20 edge in shots, an 18-12 edge in ground balls and the teams were tied in draw controls at 14-14.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 16th when they play at Georgian Court at 3:30 p.m.
