UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 8, 2021) – Despite a home run from sophomore Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), the Mercy College baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field.
The Mavericks (18-11, 14-7 ECC) drop the season series to the Lions (19-9, 15-4 ECC) and have secured the No. 3 seed in next week's ECC Championship.
Glennerster went 1-for-5 with three RBI and his third home run of the season. Graduate student Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and senior Francisco Paulino (Haina San Cristobal, Dominican Republic/Monroe College) went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Junior Charles Lebron (Brooklyn, N.Y./Franklin Pierce University) went 1-for-5 with an RBI and sophomore Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 2-for-5 with two runs. Senior Cain Ruiz (Valley Stream, N.Y./Cornerstone University) and junior Nikko Liguori (Branford, Conn./Franklin Pierce University) also added hits. Junior Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) pitched the first five innings to earn a no-decision. Freshman Max Rank (Westwood, N.J./Westwood JR/SR) pitched 0.1 innings with four runs allowed to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Jake McCarthy who went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Christopher Wiercinski pitched four inning of relief to earn the win.
Mercy jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Giblin singled and Murphy was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After a groundout moved the runners up a base, Paulino singled to bring home Giblin for the first run. Glennerster then followed with a three-run home run to left field to make it 4-0.
Molloy got a run in the bottom of the first to make it 4-1.
Mercy made it 7-1 in the second inning with three runs on three hits. Liguori singled and Giblin doubled before a walk loaded the bases. Murphy then doubled down the right field line to score Giblin and Liguori to give Mercy a 6-1 lead. Lebron brought in the final run on a groundout to second to make it 7-1.
Molloy scored a run in the third, fourth and sixth innings to make it 7-4. The Lions plated four runs in the seventh inning to take an 8-7 lead. A Sean Hogan single brought in the go-ahead run for Molloy.
Mercy could not find the equalizer, giving Molloy the win.
