DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2021) – Despite the first collegiate goal from junior Alexa Billingham (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Wilmington University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field in their 2021 home opener.
The Mavericks (1-1-2) suffer their first loss of the season, while the Wildcats (2-1-1) earn their first win over Mercy since 2010.
Billingham scored her first collegiate goal. Graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech), senior Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and sophomore Jennifer Silva (Jurupa Valley, Calif./Jurupa Valley) had a shot on goal. Senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made one save to take the loss.
Wilmington was led by Samantha Emmi and Anastasia Diakos who both scored. Emily Camp played the first half in goal and made one save and Mio Nakajima made two saves in the second half.
Torres made her lone save of the day in the 7th minute of action and Bermudez forced Camp to make a save in the 19th minute. The Wildcats scored first in the 29th minute when Krysta Memis sent a cross in front of the net to Diakos who one-timed it into the net to make it 1-0, following a free kick.
Just over two minutes later, Wilmington made it 2-0 when Emmi fired a free kick into the back of the net. Mercy inched closer in the 40th minute when Billingham fired the ball home after the goalkeeper misplayed the ball following a Maverick free kick to make it 2-1. It remained 2-1 heading into halftime.
Mercy outshot the Wildcats 6-2 in the second half, but were unable to find the equalizer and Wilmington came away with the 2-1 win.
Mercy held a 10-5 edge in shots and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 18th when they host Staten Island at 12 p.m.
