Camacho, Schwenkler and Bermudez Score as Women's Soccer Earns 3-0 Win Over Staten Island in ECC Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2021) – Powered by three different Mavericks scoring, the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over College of Staten Island in their ECC opener on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-1-2, 1-0 ECC) bounce back from their first loss of the season and win their eighth straight ECC opener, while the Dolphins (1-5, 0-1 ECC) suffer a loss in their first ECC game.

Sophomores Kayla Camacho (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) and Skyler Schwenkler (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) scored their first collegiate goals and graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) scored her second goal of the year. Sophomore Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin) dished out her first two collegiate assists and senior Sydney Cooper (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) also had an assist. Senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) played in the first 54:29 minutes of action to earn the win. Senior Veronica Scruggs (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) played the final 35:31 in goal and made one save.

Staten Island was led by Sara Villacres who had a game-high eight saves.

Mercy wasted little time on scoring as they made it 1-0 in just the 7th minute of action. Rosa took a corner and Schwenkler headed the ball into the back of the net to give Mercy an early 1-0 lead.

It remained 1-0 heading into halftime with Villacres making six saves in the first half.

The Mavericks made it 2-0 in the 51st minute when senior Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) played a ball in and Rosa touched it over to Camacho who put the ball in the net for her first collegiate goal.

Bermudez later gave Mercy a 3-0 lead when she fired home a shot after a pass from Cooper in the 81st minute.

Mercy held a 21-2 edge in shots and 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, September 21st when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 2 p.m.
