SPARKILL, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2021) – Powered by goals from senior Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon), graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) and junior Dominique Bono (Islip, N.Y./New York Tech), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 3-1 win over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (3-1-2, 2-0 ECC) have won two games in a row and start 2-0 in ECC play for the first time since 2018. The Spartans (2-4, 1-1 ECC) have dropped eight straight matchups to Mercy.
McKail netted her first goal of the season and Bono recorded her first goal as a Maverick. Bermudez now has a team-high three goals on the year. Seniors Fernanda Castro (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) and Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) dished out assists and senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) played the full 90 minutes in goal to earn the win.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Amanda Fuchs-White who scored and by Colleen Stevens who made eight saves.
Mercy recorded the first two shots on goal of the game, but the Spartans found the back of the net first in the 22nd minute on a Fuchs-White goal to make it 1-0.
St. Thomas Aquinas held the 1-0 lead for just over eight minutes when McKail found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Stevens made four saves in the half to keep the score tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Stevens opened the second half with a save of a Castro shot, but Bono put the rebound away in the 52nd minute to give Mercy a 2-1 lead.
It stayed 2-1 until the 80th minute when Hoyt fed a pass to Bermudez who finished to make it 3-1. Mercy's defense did not allow a shot on goal in the second half and held on for the win.
Mercy held a 19-3 edge in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 25th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
