ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 25, 2021) – Powered by goals from sophomore Skyler Schwenkler (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) and graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (4-1-2, 3-0 ECC) have won three games in a row and remain unbeaten in ECC play, while the Redhawks (0-6-1, 0-2 ECC) remain winless on the year.
Schwenkler scored her second goal of the year and second game-winning goal of the year. Bermudez now has a team-high four goals and sophomore Jennifer Silva (Jurupa Valley, Calif./Jurupa Valley) and senior Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) added assists. Senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made one save to earn the shutout win. Torres records her 24th career shutout in goal, which ties her with Nicole Augustine for the most in program history.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Haley Cole who had a shot on goal and by Nicolette Knauf who had four saves to take the loss.
Mercy had three shots on goal in the first half as junior Dominique Bono (Islip, N.Y./New York Tech), Bermudez and Schwenkler forced Knauf to make three saves. However, the score remained 0-0 at halftime with Mercy holding a 7-2 edge in shots.
The score remained 0-0 heading into the 63rd minute when Schwenkler fired a Silva corner kick into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
It stayed 1-0 until the 87th minute when Bermudez put home a cross from Hoyt to make it 2-0. The Mavericks defense did not surrender a shot on goal in the second half, leading to the shutout win on the road.
Mercy held a 12-4 edge in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 29th when they host Bridgeport at 12 p.m.
