DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2021) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 6th minute of action from senior Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-1-2, 4-0 ECC) have won four games in a row and are 3-0-1 against the Purple Knights (3-5, 0-2 ECC) in their last four meetings.
McKail scored her second goal of the season and senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made three saves to earn the shutout win. Torres recorded her 25th career shutout, setting a school record for career shutouts. The previous record was 24 set by Nicole Augustine.
Bridgeport was led by Andrea Basilicato who had a team-high two shots. Clara Karlsson made three saves to take the loss.
Mercy wasted little time in scoring as McKail fired a shot from 30 yards out with the goalkeeper out of the net to make it 1-0 in just the 6th minute of action.
Torres made two saves in the first half to keep Mercy ahead 1-0 heading into halftime.
In the second half, Torres made an additional save to keep Bridgeport scoreless and the Mavericks came away with the 1-0 win.
Mercy held a 10-6 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 5th when they play at Southern N.H. at 7 p.m.
