HOOKSETT, N.H. (Oct. 5, 2021) – Powered by a goal from graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) and four saves from senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-1 double-overtime tie at No. 7 Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday night at Penmen Stadium.
The Mavericks (5-1-3) remain unbeaten in their last five games and hand the unbeaten Penmen (9-0-1) their first tie of the season.
Bermudez netted her team-leading fifth goal of the year and Torres stopped four shots in the second half and overtime.
Southern New Hampshire was led by Allyson Patterson who scored and by Z Kaplan who made six saves.
The matchup of two perennial East Region contenders saw the Mavericks dominate the action early on, forcing Kaplan to make three saves in the opening 20 minutes of action. Mercy finally broke through in the 27th minute when Bermudez scored to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Following a Penmen misplay, Bermudez fired a shot from 20 yards out into the corner of the net to give Mercy the early lead.
It remained 1-0 heading into halftime with Mercy recording all eight shots in the half.
The score stayed 1-0 heading late into the game when Patterson fired a shot from just inside the box that found its way over Torres' head to even the score at 1-1. Torres made two saves in the final 10 minutes to keep the game tied, sending the contest into overtime.
Torres stopped the lone shot attempt by either team in the first overtime period, sending the game into a second overtime.
Southern New Hampshire hit the crossbar in the 109th minute of action and had a free kick go over the net as time expired. Neither team would score in the second overtime period and the back-and-forth affair ended in a 1-1 tie.
Mercy held a 10-9 edge in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 9th when they host Lincoln at 3 p.m.
