SPARKILL, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2021) – Despite the first career goal from freshman Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (1-2) have dropped two games in a row, while the Spartans (1-4) earn their first win of the season.
Volz scored her first collegiate goal off a penalty stroke and had a game-high three shots on goal. Senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made four saves to take her second loss of the season.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Olivia Cerbo and Hailey Galison who both scored. Jessie Hohenstein made six saves to earn the win.
The Spartans wasted little time in scoring as they took a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute of action. Viscione made an initial save on an Erin Bacalles shot before Cerbo scored to give STAC an early 1-0 lead.
Just over two minutes later, Galison found the back of the cage to make it 2-0. The score remained 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Mercy forced Hohenstein to make four saves to open the second quarter. Volz finally got Mercy on the board in the 28th minute when she scored on a penalty stroke to make it 2-1. The score stayed at 2-1 heading into halftime.
The Mavericks recorded a shot on goal in the third and fourth quarters but was unable to find the equalizer.
STAC held a 10-9 edge in shots and Mercy held a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 18th when they play at No. 8 Stonehill at 1 p.m.
