Game Preview: Field Hockey Hosts No. 6 Millersville and Southern Connecticut to Open Week

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2021) – The Mercy College field hockey team hosts No. 6 Millersville University on Monday, September 20th at 4 p.m. before hosting Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, September 22nd at 3 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 7-1 loss to No. 8 Stonehill on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by sophomore Rachel Palladino who scored her first collegiate goal and junior Alyssa Sacco had her first assist of the season. Senior Lauren Viscione made seven saves and sophomore Flynn Kirk had her first defensive save. Freshman Kasey Volz scored her first collegiate at STAC on Thursday and junior Lily Sherry scored the game-winning goal in Mercy's 1-0 season-opening win over Molloy on September 5th. Sophomore Rieley Fitzgerald also has an assist and Viscione is 0-3 in goal with 19 saves and a .613 save percentage in three starts. The Mavericks are looking to qualify for the NE10 Tournament for the first time in just their second year as members of the conference. Mercy won three NE10 games in their inaugural season as members in 2019 and will look to increase that number in 2021. The Mavericks have been picked 14th in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll but look to prove the coaches wrong. First-year Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola returns Sacco who was named to the NE10 All-Rookie Team in 2019 after leading the team with three goals and three assists for nine points. Sherry also returns after appearing in 16 games in 2019, recording the game-winning goal against Pace. Also coming back is junior Katie Kreider who scored two goals in 2019 and graduate student Nicole Cotton and senior Savanna James also return after scoring goals in 2019. Senior Briannagh Smith returns after starting in 11 games in 2019 with one assist. Viscione and senior Cydney Wolff are back in goal for the Mavericks. Viscione made 154 saves in 2019 with two shutouts and a .782 save percentage in 16 starts. Also returning from the 2019 team are juniors Christy Falisi and Taylor Durkin. Spinazzola will also rely upon sophomores Kate Ringstad, Kelly Rosenfeld, Rory McComb, Ally Schreck, Kirk, Palladino, Kyra Reyes, Fitzgerald and Victoria Devlin and Volz, Jessica Evans and Alexandra Giordano.

Scouting the Marauders

Millersville is currently No. 6 nationally in the latest NFHCA Coaches' Poll and has opened their season with six straight wins. The Marauders are coming off a 5-1 win over Mount Olive in their last game on Saturday. Millersville is playing their first road game of the season after opening the season with six straight home games. The Marauders have finished with a winning record in each of the last eight seasons and has made five NCAA Tournament appearances during that time, winning the National Championship in 2014. Millersville is led by Bri Harsh who has a team-high 20 points on a team-high nine goals with two assists. Kayla Michaels has a team-high four assists and Morgan Saunders and Qhayiya Nogoduka are second on the team with nine points by way of four goals and one assist. Kerstin Koons is 6-0 in goal with seven saves and just three goals allowed in 325 minutes of action.

Scouting the Owls

Southern Connecticut dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to American International on Saturday. The Owls picked up their lone win of the season on September 12th when they defeated Franklin Pierce, 3-2. Southern Connecticut was picked 13th in the NE10 Coaches' Poll after going 1-16 in 2019. Alyssa Haskins leads the Owls with a team-high three points by way of one goal and one assist. Kaitlyn Bourque, Kiley Jackson and Josephine Nolet have also scored on the year and Brianna Shaw has an assist. Janelle Ward is 1-3 in goal with 62 saves and a .816 save percentage.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Friday, September 24th when they play at American International at 7 p.m.
