DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2021) – Despite a goal from junior Marco Passera (Haugesund, Norway/Spring Hill College), the Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Georgian Court University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-2) see their four-game winning streak come to an end and lose their first home game since November 3, 2018 against LIU Post. Mercy was 14-0-2 in their last 16 home games prior to today's game. The Lions (3-0-1) have won three games in a row.
Passera scored his first goal as a Maverick and senior Javier Mangado (Logrono, Spain/Wheeling University) had his first assist as a Maverick. Graduate student Felipe Baeza (Santiago, Chile/USC Upstate) made four saves to take the loss.
Georgian Court was led by Mathias Madersbachner and Jonathan Firmino who both scored. Gianluca Cersosimo made eight saves to earn the win.
The Mavericks recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 3rd minute of action. However, the Lions scored first in the 15th minute when Madersbachner scored following a misplay by the Mercy goalie that led to an open net.
Mercy continued to trail 1-0 until the Lions added another goal in the 31st minute to make it 2-0. Firmino headed in a corner kick taken by Louis Silva to give Georgian Court a two-goal lead. Cersosimo made four saves in the first half to keep the Mavericks off the scoreboard and the Lions headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The score remained 2-0 heading into the 61st minute when Mangado found Passera who beat the goalie 1v1 to the right side to make it 2-1. Mercy continued to apply pressure looking to find the tying goal, but Cersosimo made four saves in the final 30 minutes to keep the Mavericks from tying the game.
Mercy held a 17-13 edge in shots and an 11-5 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 25th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m.
