Jones and Kuhn Score as Men's Soccer Earns 2-2 Tie at Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 25, 2021) – Powered by goals from senior Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) and junior Matthias Kuhn (Viernheim, Germany/University of Mannheim), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 2-2 double-overtime tie at ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (4-2-1, 1-0-1 ECC) earn their first tie of the season and remain unbeaten in ECC play. The Redhawks (2-4-1, 0-1-1 ECC) remain winless in ECC play with the tie. The tie is the first for the Mavericks in ECC regular season play since a 1-1 tie at Queens on October 15, 2016.

Jones netted his second goal of the season and Kuhn added his team-leading third goal of the year. Junior David Breitenbach (Mannheim, Germany/Barton College) had his first two assists as a Maverick and freshman Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Verbo Divino) dished out his second assist of the season. Graduate student Felipe Baeza (Santiago, Chile/USC Upstate) played the full 110 minutes in goal and made three saves.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Nathan Ferguson and Ryan Curtis who both scored. Jared Gibbons made five saves.

The Redhawks scored in just the 6th minute of action to take an early 1-0 lead. Ferguson found the back of the net following assists by Tamas Nagy and Dylan Ruiz.

The score remained 1-0 until the 38th minute when Jones headed in a ball that was played in by Breitenbach and Penafiel to even the score at 1-1. The game remained tied at 1-1 heading into halftime with Mercy holding a 5-3 edge in shots.

Roberts Wesleyan retook the lead in the 58th minute on a Curtis goal, which made it 2-1 in favor of the hosts. The Mavericks continued to apply pressure and found the equalizer when Kuhn put a ball over Gibbons head on the right side to make it 2-2 in the 77th minute. Breitenbach assisted on the goal for his second assist of the day.

It remained 2-2 for the rest of regulation, despite Mercy outshooting the Redhawks 13-7 in the second half.

In the first overtime period each team recorded a shot, but were unable to score so a second overtime period was needed. Roberts Wesleyan posted the lone two shots of the second overtime period and were unable to score so the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Mercy held a 19-13 edge in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 29th when they host Bridgeport at 3 p.m.
