DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2021) – Powered by double-digit kills from junior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) and senior Nilka Rivera Maldonado (Bayamon, P.R./Concordia College) and a match-high 32 assists from junior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College), the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-16) win over Dominican College on Tuesday night at Victory Hall Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (4-6) have won two matches in a row and have won six straight against the Chargers (2-7).
Schneid had a match-high 13 kills with nine digs and four aces. Rivera Maldonado had 10 kills and five digs and Gonzalez had 32 assists with five digs. Senior Sophia Flanders (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had nine digs and junior Stéphanie Lankhorst (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap Apeldoorn) had five kills.
Dominican was led by Kaitlyn Carr who had nine kills.
Mercy jumped out to a 6-0 lead in set one after a Rivera Maldonado kill. Dominican battled back and cut Mercy's lead to 10-8, but the Mavericks responded with a 7-1 run to take a 17-9 lead. Mercy led the rest of the way and finished off the set with back-to-back kills from Rivera Maldonado and Gonzalez to take a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks took a 9-3 lead in set two, forcing a Charger timeout. Out of the timeout, Dominican made it 17-14, but Mercy closed out the set with eight straight points to earn a 25-14 win in set two.
Mercy held a narrow 8-7 lead in set three before the Mavericks went on an 11-4 run, finished off by three straight Rivera Maldonado aces, to make it 19-11. Dominican answered with four straight points to make it 19-15. However, Mercy would go on to finish off the set on a 6-1 run, capped off by a Lankhorst kill to give the Mavericks the straight-set win.
Mercy had 36 kills, 34 assists, 38 digs, two blocks, 12 aces and hit .253. Dominican had 24 kills, 20 assists, 28 digs, two blocks, zero aces and hit .107.
Head Coach Gary Preston Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, September 26th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
